"아쉬움이 남는다" 영어로 어떻게 말할까? (ft. 라이브아카데미 신용하)

아쉬움이 남는다는 표현은 영어로 어떻게 말할 수 있을까요?

아래와 같은 표현이 있긴 한데

It leaves a lot to be desired

It leaves much to be desired

It leaves something to be desired

It leaves quite a lot to be desired

 

 

외국인들이 이 표현을 쓰는 사례를 보면 우리가 '아쉬움이 남는다'로 쓰는 뉘앙스랑 딱 들어맞지는 않는다.

The movie leaves a lot to be desired

The movie leaves something to be desired

It was good. But, I have to say, it leaves something to be desired

 

The government's recent decision leaves something to be desired

The government's recent decision leaves a lot to be desired

 

The new logo design... It leaves a lot to be desired to say the least

※ to say the least 뜻: 아주 약하게 얘기했을 때

 

Our education system in Korea has seen a lot of improvement over the years, but it still leaves a lot to be desired

 

위의 예시들은 그래도 들어맞는 경우이고 아래는 어울리지 않는 예문이다.

 

The chicken and the pasta were great. They were excellent. But, the pizza... It left something to be desired.

이 맥락에서는 좀 어색하다. 이런 맥락에서는 잘 안 쓴다.

 

개인 경험, 경험한 사람이 너무 소수인 것, 개인적인 후회에 대해서 말할 때는 잘 사용하지 않음.

비교적 formal한 어감으로 사용함

그렇다면 이런 맥락에서는 어떻게 말하는 게 좋냐?

The chicken and the pasta were great. They were excellent. But, the pizza wasn't quite up there with the rest.

It wasn't quite on par with the rest 라고 해도 됨. (나머지와 같은 수준이 아니었다)

 

I wish the pizza was a little better 라고 해도 됨.

I mean, it wasn't bad per se.. 그것 자체만 봤을 땐 나쁘지 않았어

 

Yeah, I would even say that it was above average. It's just that the others were so exceptionally good that it made the pizza seem worse.

 

내가 충분히 하지 못한 것(대회, 시험 등)에 대해 아쉬움이 남는다고 할 때는 It leaves something to be desired 같은 표현을 쓰지 않는다.

 

어떤 거에 대한 결과물(영화, 정부의 결정, 회사의 새로운 로고 디자인, 교육 체계 등)에 대해서 아쉬울 때 It leaves something to be desired를 쓴다.

그리고 결과물이 꼭 노력이 부족해서 아쉽다는 경우보다도 방향이 잘못돼서, 기대에 빗나가서 아쉽다는 경우일 때도 아주 잘 어울리는 표현!

 

아쉬움에 대해서 표현할 때 꼭 1:1로 '아쉬움이 영어로 뭐지?'라고 찾기보다는 다양하게 우회적으로 표현할 수 있으면 좋다.

 

I wish ~ 라는 표현을 활용할 수 있으면 '아쉬움'이라는 단어를 몰라도 전혀 상관 없다.

I wish the pizza was a little better

I wish the government had made a different decision

I wish the logo was a little more ...

 

could have를 활용해서도 충분히 표현할 수 있다.

I think the logo could have been a little simpler

I think the government could have come up with a much better solution had they listened to the people
