Air conditioning sickness이라고 하면 웬만하면 통할 것 같다.

그런데 우리는 '냉방병'이라고 흔히 얘기하지만 영어권에서는 그 상황을 있는 그대로 묘사하는 편이다.

 

I think I've had the AC on for too long.

I think I should turn it off for a while.

It's making it really dry in here.

It's giving me a headache / a stuffy nose / a sore throat

It's making my nose really stuffy

 

It's making me (feel) sick.

 

이런 식으로 표현하는 경우가 더 많다.

냉방병은 영어로 뭐지? 이런 식으로 1:1 매칭되는 단어를 찾기보다는 외국인들이 냉방병을 어떤 식으로 말하는지 폭넓은 맥락 속에서 접근을 하면 좋을 것 같다.

 

에어컨 적당히 켜 Go easy on the A/C.

너 그러다가 냉방병 걸린다 It's going to make you sick.

 

그런 반면에 일사병은 heat exhaustion은 그대로 많이 쓰는 편이다.

 

Be careful not to get heat exhaustion.

You can easily get heat exhaustion in this kind of weather.

 

 

이건 자연현상이라서 에어컨이랑은 좀 다르다.

Air conditioning sickness라는 표현이 있긴 하지만 상황을 묘사하는 편이 훨씬 자연스럽다.

 

Air conditioningitis라는 용어가 있길래 찾아봤더니 한국에서 만들어진 말인 것 같다. 완전 틀린 말은 아니지만 외국인들이 알아듣지 못할 확률이 높다.

The term air-conditioningitis is not in common usage by native speakers, but the manner in which it is constructed is not uncommon(=quite common).

The symptoms described may be real but as it's a recent phenomenon there is no single, official medical word for the condition.
